Five historic districts
Delray Beach has five historic districts on its Local Register of Historic Places, and two of them are also on the National Register.
Frame vernacular is the most common style in Old School Square, where buildings date from 1902 to 1945. The Marina district was mostly built between 1922 and 1943, and Nassau Park dates from 1935 to 1941.
The city's Historic Preservation Board works to protect the character of that architecture. If your project changes the outside of a historic home, check with the city first, and tell us about the district when you book.
Closing the house
If the house sits closed part of the year, humidity is the risk. UF/IFAS Extension advises leaving the A/C set no higher than 85 degrees, because above that, indoor humidity passes 55 to 60 percent, which can lead to mold.
Fresh paint needs dry air too. High humidity stretches drying and curing times.
Check the rules
If you own a condo, check first that your association's documents allow the project. Most associations ask owners for a form with the scope of work and who is doing it. HOA communities have rules too. Read them and bring them to the visit.
Permits differ by city
Inside city limits, building permits go through Delray Beach Development Services. Outside city limits, Palm Beach County handles them.
